My review of C. T. Funkhouser’s New Directions in Digital Poetry is now up at Triquarterly. I highly recommend it.

Great review. (btw I somehow missed the pdf documents collecting feedback to that “issue 1” prank; my favorite reaction: “it is 20 year old computer geeks horse shit!”)

But I don’t think it’s fair to say your understanding of digital poetry was naive, or that your definition was reductionist. There are a lot of different approaches being tried out now; either you can go wide and shallow or delve deep. Generating text from statistical models built from other texts seems like a great approach to delve deep into: you get a stronger understanding of interactivity, mathematics, the original text, your authorial intuitions, and how these all work together during authoring. Besides, the term “digital poetry” already seems a little dated; I seriously doubt anyone will speak of “digital poetry” 10, maybe even 5 years from now.
